Philosophy

If she vaunts herself, I abase her,
If she abases herself, I vaunt her;
And contradict her always,
Until she comprehends
That she is an incomprehensible monster.

Aamir & Anand !!

On winning the World Chess Championships in 2000, Anand was extensively felicitated across India. I happened to visit one such function organized, in his honor, at Bandra. Aamir Khan was the guest of honor along with Sunil Dutt, who was present as the felicitation was in his constituency . Aamir Khan is reputed to be a brilliant chess player. Anand analysed one of his games on a demo board for the benefit of the ecstatic crowd. All the time Aamir was standing and listening to each and every word of Anand's wisdom with attention. I clicked this photo just before the game analysis started.

Sunil Dutt, who was using a walking stick to support himself, also stood for the entire length of the game analysis. I presume this to be a mark of repect for the genius of Anand.

Anand was to be felicitated on the same day by the Maharashtra Govt. too (in the evening). The government felicitation was a joke. Anand was presented a cheque of Rs. 500000. Small change for Anand. He donated the amount then and there to the Prime Minister's earthquake relief fund.

War Memorial in Dombivli

One of the places that i visit often in Dombivli is the "War Memorial" in honor of Captain Vinay Kumar Sachan, who died in kashmir in the line of duty while in his early 20's. He was a resident of Dombivli. Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation made a great effort in creating a Memorial in his honor (at the MIDC ground) and getting a decommissioned tank from the Indian Army to be placed at this memorial. Adjacent to the memorial is a small 'war museum of sorts', where personas of some martyrs are displayed in metal and art . I took some snaps there, which are seen below !

Captain Vinay Kumar Sachan

The Army tank at Captain Vinay's memorial

Depiction of Indian Army's victory in the Kargil War (atop Tiger Hill)

"Wagah Border Gate" ...now in Dombivli !

I had actually visited Wagah Border many times at the height of Indo- Pak tensions years ago. When the march happens, people from India sit on one side. People from Pakistan sit on the other. The gate between India and Pakistan is thrown open and a small military ceremony happens. It was no less than war at that time even at his march ! When the Indian soldiers stomped, Indians used to cheer and pakistanis used to boo and vice versa. Officers on both sides tried hard to assuage the feelings !!

Pakistan resigning during the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. 90000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their arms and surrendered to the Indian Army. Under the Geneva War Convention, "Prisoners of War" can't be ill-treated. They were sent back to Pakistan with individual dignity upholded . Pakistan's dignity though was severely wounded.

Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw, a legend in India

This is one of those places where i find absolute peace. A very small gallery, but a huge step for Dombivli. When people are busy building malls, residential complexes and commercial establishments, here is one sterling example of the cultural sensitivities of Dombivli.

Saw Shammi Kapoor

Went to Breach Candy hospital today for a battery of tests . Saw Shammi Kapoor (the bollywood superstar of yester years !) coming in a wheel chair...He has thinned down a lot...probably due to illness.

I feel so happy to have seen him in person! As he came in i felt i knew him but wasn't able to place him...as i walked past him, it struck me and i became standstill. I turned back and saw him till he got into a lift :)

Obituary - Mr S.S.Natu

At 1.30 am, i heard a car starting. I woke up to see whether any theft was being attempted. What i saw was my neighbour's daughter getting into the car (after closing the main gate). I immediately knew that her dad, who was hospitalized, must have had some complication. He took his last breath today . His age must be around 75.
We have heard of lots of rags to riches stories. He lived through one, being the protagonist himself. From a penniless child to a multi - millionaire, his life has been an inspiration to the people around here. Many have sought his blessing while starting new ventures. I remember even an autowala's family taking his blessings while their son was embarking his life as an auto owner & driver. Yet few people outside Dombivli know him or his journey, for, he always liked to keep a low profile.
Normally when we think of any person, we always get a mixed baggage of feelings. There are some good impressions and then there are some bad impressions. However Mr. Natu is a man who has always evoked only positive feelings. It is amazing. But this is what comes out of a life lived to the fullest.
After my first year of MBA in 2008, we chanced to meet on the stairs. While moving down, he gave me two points of his business values, which have become a part of my own consciousness.
1. Always think big - He said that he was always amazed at how people think small and live small, worrying incessantly about EMI's, rejected loan applications, security etc . They never get out of the trap. So always think big. Don't live a hand-to-mouth existance.
2. Keep a very low profile and build your inner strength- This is one value which i espouse myself. He said we need to keep a low profile. He himself kept such low a profile that even his relatives/neighbours didn't know about his meteroic rise. Also people won't feel threatened and so they won't try to bring us down. While maintaining a low profile, we need to grow strong from within.
A life so successful is unfortunately not documented (to my knowledge). His daughters who run & grow the businesses now may take time out some day to pen his life. And even that will inspire many. As in life, so after.
May his soul rest in peace.
Amen

The Shashi Ruia Experience !!

The 29 recruits under the fast track Business Leadership Program at Essar including me received a special experience yesterday when the chairman of the Essar Group, the legendary Shashi Ruia came down to be with us and interact with us for an hour and a half !!

Most of us being from premier B-schools, have had the experience of meeting corporate honchos. So none of us was overawed by his presence. That helped us to keep our sanity and interact in the manner we normally interact. I remember seeing Vishwanathan Anand for the first time in Bandra many years ago and i was overawed & literally shaking with excitement for 2 hours!! So much so that i couldn't even click photos properly ! Here though it was sane ! Each of us had a introduction session and Shashiji asked each one of us questions and preferences. We also got a chance to ask strategic questions to him, the answers which can be given holistically only by him. All in all a nice experience.

I believe in the entrepreneurial way of things and i see here an opportunity to create opportunities for new businesses in whatever role i am assigned. It is a wide value chain and there are innumerable points of impact. Love the company and the job. Not been assigned to a particular department yet. So no idea of who my boss might be. I hope he/she starts throwing huge business and entrepreneurial challenges asap at me.

Defining International Human Right Norms

Not finding a comprehensive definition of international human right norms, i made an attempt to define it by understanding various crucial features of the norms. Each and every word of the definition has a specific meaning. I believe it is a truly holistic definition:

" International Human Right Norms are high priority universally shared norms of actual human moralities, withstanding cultural diversity and national sovereignty, acting as minimal standards, and dealing mainly with how people should be treated by their governments and institutions in the light of numerous existing & emerging concerns of individuals and society "

Everything's gonna be alright - "Rap" part

I searched on the net for the rap part from the song "everything's gonna be alright (from the movie JUMBO") ... Lyrics of the song was available but the "rap" part was missing :(

So i had no option but to listen to the part many times over and write down the lyrics word by word :) This is what it seems to be:

" Stepping through my wing
Do u feel my floor
I have been there & done
More than you'll ever know

And now I've got a message
For those who give a damn
I am not preaching
Just stating where i stand

I've had girls & hotties
been messed up with parties
Screaming from my lungs
Swearing from my tongue

Never did i think
That I'll stop to sing
My value my culture
My history

So i tell you
Keep the faith
It's hard to love
Or cease it a hate
But love is all you need
Not guns & knives
I don't mean to draw sword
I've got life !! "

and then the song lyrics come up

" Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Jab tak hum side by side
Everything's gonna be alright

Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Jab tak tu hai mere side
Everything's gonna be alright "

John Stuart Mill - Appreciation of military; Women's rights

Mill demonstrated a deep appreciation for the military, noting in his essay "The Contest In America":

"But war, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other."

Simply put, what he means is that war is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I find his articles and essays exceptional, full of original thought and expression. His deeds speak a lot about his vision and strength of character. He was the first person in British Parliament to call for women to be given the right to vote. Mill became a strong advocate of women rights and such political and social reforms as proportional representation, labor unions, and farm cooperatives.

Under the guise of having gained gender equality and liberation and all the freedoms which humans being humans deserve, women shouldn't forget the contributions of men like John Mill in giving a direction to women's movement and equality. It was because of such visionary men like Raja Ram Mohan Roy & John Stuart Mill that women got the direction to further their causes. It is but the nature of people to forget support and contributions. However with the rise of such movements as "feminism", there is a deliberate effort to undermine their contributions which i feel is far more outrageous than just ignoring them.

John Stuart Mill - Value of the natural world

John Stuart Mill's writings spoke of so many core ideas which i have always believed in. His insight into the value of the natural world struck a very knowing chord in my heart. To quote him from Book IV, Chapter VI of his 'Principles of political economy' written in 1948,

"I confess i am not charmed with the ideal of life held out by those who think that the normal state of human beings is that of struggling to get on; that the trampling, crushing, elbowing and treading on each other's heels, which form the existing type of social life, are the most desirable lot of human kind, or anything but the disagreeable symptoms of one of the phases of industrial progress."

Mill expressed the value of 'nature' itself, and that the destruction of 'solitude' and the natural world does not amount to progress.

" Nor is there much satisfaction in contemplating the world with nothing left to the spontaneous activity of nature; with every rood of land brought into cultivation, which i capable of growing food for human beings; every flowery waste or natural pasture ploughed up, all quadrupeds or birds which are not domesticated for man's use exterminated as his rivals for food, every hedgerow or superfluous tree rooted out, and scarcely a place left where a wild shrub or flower could grow without being eradicated as a weed in the name of improved agriculture. If the earth must lose that great portion of its pleasantness which it owes to things that the unlimited increase of wealth and population would extirpate from it, i sincerely hope, for the sake of posterity, that they will be content to be stationary, long before necessity compel them to it."

Every concern of his has come true today. And we still dont understand or comprehend our actions, be it environment degradation or population production. I find it really amazing that humans consider their ability to do a thing to be their right. So till the time they are capable of doing something, they will do it. And people like me who have unwittingly and against our wishes been brought into this world will have to perennially suffer.

Beautiful Sketches - Hollywood Stars !!

Angelina Jolie - After a mad rush of adopting children, she seems to have run out of steam. She expressed the desire to stay away from the children and husband for some time. Even one child is hard to manage. Adopting children across continents as collectibles is something which makes a mockery of motherhood. Hope she gives them the promised ray of hope.

Brad Pitt -Love makes a person blind. It has made him insane. Unwittingly he has become hand-in-glove with angelina in adopting children. And we don't even know whether he likes to have so many children or not. The cap here is terrific. I will buy such a cap as soon as i find one !!

Heart throb of millions

Keira Knightly - I liked her acting in " Bend it like Beckham" . Even now she needs to improve a lot. Also she needs to build up a good body. She evokes no sex appeal. To me she looks malnourished.

Meg Ryan - Dreamy Eyes ! Just imagine her age though. She was born in 1961 which makes her all of 48 !! Maintains herself well. I loved her movie "IQ" in which Albert Einstein plays the cupid !!

Sean Connery -He came third in the 1950 Mr. Universe Competition !! Soon he became "Bond, James Bond" !! At age 60, in 1989, he was voted the sexiest man alive. His comment, " Well there aren't many sexy dead men, are there?" !! i loved him in the movie "The Rock"

Fees Hike in management education

Hike in fees charged for providing management education seems to be the new buzzword. Last year some IIM's had upped the fees to aorund 10 Lakhs for the two year course. IIM Kolkata has announced rise in fees to around 9-9.5 L.

The trend seems to have percolated to the next level too. Narsee Monjee is all set to hike the fees to " atleast 8 Lakhs" in the words of the admission office !

When i told my mom about this trend, she was shell shocked. Her first reaction was, families like ours would never be able to afford MBA. This simply echoed my own thoughts. For me it seems impossible for a candidate like me to do MBA. I couldn't even think of doing engineering because at that time we couldn't even afford that. For that prime reason i took up commerce. Commerce stream was offering the cheapest courses. Later after post graduation i took up a part-time management course offered by Mumbai University. I had to drop out after first year as i couldn't even afford the 2nd year fees of Rs 15 k.

For the current fees of MBA(2007-09) in Narsee Monjee which is around 3.5 L for 2 years, i had to run from pillar to post. MY loan application was rejected by all banks applied to. My cousin gave me the money at the last minute and hence i could do MBA. 8 -9 lakhs for education is simply not within my range.

2 years ago HRD ministry had tried to take over control of the IIM management board to thrust OBC quota down the country's throat. The intention was serpentine. And i was revolted. But now it seems that the government needs to step in. If not for reduction of fees, atleast for making sure that the deserving candidates do get loan for pursuing higher education. If not, MBA will become the domain of the deserving candidates of the well-to-do & rich class only. There is then a fundamental flaw in the system, because education has always been the only hope for the rest of the classes to get out of the circle of deprivation. If that is snatched away from us, then we will lose our only hope.

Mind Structure

I love Sigmund Freud's work. His work in the realms of the human mind and personality is mindblowing. He had once famously said, " I was the only worker in a new field." And that explains the challenges before him.

For him, nothing was ever accidental. Even a slip of tongue was enough to gain insight into the mind of a person because it reflects the working of the unconscious mind. Say a patient tells his doctor inadvertently, "please do not give me any more bills" instead of "pills", it shows the patient to be financially stressed. Similarly, our repressed sexual, aggressive and other tendencies make their way out through jokes and sarcasms.

He said that human personality- including its emotions and strivings-arose due to a conflict between our aggressive pleasure-seeking biological impulses and the social restraints against them.

Our mind is like an iceberg. As we know, 90% of the mass of the iceberg is under water & only 10 % above it. Our conscious awareness is that part of the iceberg which floats above the surface. Below the surface is the much larger unconscious region which contains thoughts, wishes, feelings and memories of which we are largely unaware. For instance, a child below 18 months loves to suck a finger. I have seen parents commanding harshly to remove the finger or simply removing the finger from the mouth themselves. They repeat it till the child loses that habit. However, a conflict has arisen. Children who never quite resolve this conflict have a great chance of becoming"orally-fixated" in their adult life. They might continue to seek oral gratification through smoking or excessive eating. Or they might exhibit passive dependence like that of a nursing infant.

I have drawn an image to describe the mind functioning.

The conflicts which we were talking about, revolve around three interacting systems. In simple words:

Id - pleasure principle - makes the mind seek instant gratification.

Ego - Reality principle - seeks to satisfy Id's impulses in a realistic way. ( for instance, a sexually starved person might feel like having sex with someone. However, ego contains and restrains by showing the real-life demands of the external world. So instead of forcing someone, the person chooses to find a consenting partner. This person might be a prostitute or a life partner or just some consenting person)

Superego- It is a voice of conscience that forces the ego to consider not only the real but also the ideal. (In the above example of the sexually starved person, he/she might consider a prostitute as not-ideal according to the value system/culture. Instead, that person might wait for a life partner to gratify sexual needs.)

A few days back, i was coming home from dombivli station. It was around 9.30 pm. In front of me, a person was partly walking and partly swaying under the influence of alcohol. In such an inebriated stage, our real nature seeks to come out. In front of us there was an unmanned cart full of apples. Now, this man immediately stole one apple and hid it behind his back and kept walking. The vendor saw this and came running and confronted him. The man immediately gaave up the apple and went forward. I hurried to see what he would do next. As soon as he saw a bend, he went into it and then started running, looking back all the time. I followed too. He then went into some society compund and hid there for some time. When he felt safe, he came out.

In an inebriated state, the id became dominant. He lost sight of the real world and the ideal world. Theft was not his main motive though. If theft had been his innermost desire, he wouldn't have given up the apple so easily. His desire was of thrill. Thrill of doing something naughty like a child. When he was caught, he didn't quite comprehend what was happening though he very obediently returned the apple. However in a few seconds he had some inkling of the reality. His ego and superego woke up to make him run and hide. He felt scared maybe because of the fear of being beaten. He became aware enough to protect himself.

I am reminded of another incident. This was in 1999. I was traveling from Pilani to Delhi by bus at night. There was a bus driver and a companion who was supposed to be a backup driver. He was fully drunk and swinging to the tunes of "chamma chamma". I hadn't got a seat and so i was sitting in the driver's area on the cross seat. He couldn't be brought under control at all. However, his Id was the only dominant energy here. So he could uninhibitedly do whatever he felt like doing. The same is the case with any child. It startes crying when it wants something. As the ego develops, the young child begins to cope with the real world.Well, in the morning when he came back to his senses, i told him of his behaviour thoughout the night. He couldn't believe his ears at all !!

The superego's demands often oppose the Id's and the ego struggles to reconcile the two.
